A Few Things To Ask When Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the answer is no then I would advise you to stop right there and look for an alternative photographer. No need to continue the conversation. If you hire a relative or aquaintance to take the photographs, and they trip and injure someone, who is going to cover for the medical expenses. Remember in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to protect yourself.

If the answer is yes, then continue questioning to find out how much coverage is afforded inside the insurance, what does and doesn’t it cover, and who has to pay for any out of pocket expense that the insurance doesn’t cover?

Also make sure you get a copy of the insurance before the event just to make sure the insurance really does exist and that it is still current.

You ought to know how long the vendor has been doing sports photography, where they did their photographic training and what certifications, if any do they have. Ask if they belong to any photographer associations and if they’ve ever won any photographic competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see evidence.

Any reputable and reliable sports photographer should have no problem in offering references from previous customers. Make sure you call them and ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she easy to work with?
  • What were the final shots like? Were you happy?
  • Would you hire him/her again?

Ask to look at samples of their sports photography from different events. This shouldl give you a better sense of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they really are. In addition, by checking out different events this will give you an idea of whether or not the photographer is consistently good…or just lucky every once in a while.

By having could possibly make the shoot run more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, right? An assistant or second photographer will also mean have the same pictures taken from different angles and therefore showing different effects. Finally, there will be a little bit of insurance of not missing shots if the equipment of the first photographer breaks down.

It is vital that you establish exactly what it is that you are getting for your money before you sign any contracts. How much time will the photographer be at the sporting event? How many images will be delivered? How will you receive the proofs? Will the photographer do any post-production editing of photographs so any blemishes can be removed? Wiil the package include albums or framed photographs?

In addition, ensure you ask how long you have to decide which photos you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to get the final delivery?

It’s vital that you ask these questions and don’t make assumptions. Doing this means that you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations haven’t been met.
