A Few Things To Ask When Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the answer is no then I would advise you to stop right there. No need to continue the discussion. Should you employ a friend or aquaintance to carry out the task, and they trip and injure someone, who is going to cover for the medical expenses. Remember in the USA people sue very quickly so you need to protect yourself.

If the answer is yes, then continue asking questions to find out how much coverage is afforded inside the insurance, what does and doesn’t it cover, and who has to pay for any out of pocket expense that aren’t covered?

Also make sure you get a copy of the insurance before the event just to make sure the insurance really does exist and that it is still active.

You ought to know how long the applicant has been doing sports photography, where they did their photographic training and what diplomas, if any do they have. Ask if they belong to any photographer associations or if they’ve ever won any photographic competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see proof.

Any good and experienced sports photographer should have no problem in providing you with references from previous customers. Make sure you call them and ask questions such as:

  • Was the photographer a pleasure to work with?
  • What were the final shots like? Were you happy?
  • Would you hire him/her again?

Request to see samples of their work from different events. This shouldl give you a good sense of the depth of their work and how good they really are. In addition, by looking at different events this will give you an idea of whether or not the photographer is consistently good…or just lucky every now and then.

By having could possibly make the shoot run a lot more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, right? An assistant or second photographer could mean have the same shots taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Finally, there will be a a little insurance that they will not miss shots if the equipment of the first photographer breaks down.

It is important that you establish exactly what it is that you are getting for your money before you hire the sports photographer. How long will the photographer stay at the sporting event? How many photos will be delivered? How will the proofs be delivered? Will there be post-production editing of photos so any blemishes can be removed? Wiil the package include albums or framed photographs?

Also, make sure you ask how long you have to decide which images you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to receive the final delivery?

It’s really important to ask all these questions and don’t just assume. That way you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations haven’t been met.
