Questions You Should Ask When You Are Considering Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the answer is no then stop right there and look for an alternative photographer. No need to continue the discussion. Should you employ a relative or aquaintance to take the photographs, and they trip and injure someone, who is going to cover for the medical bills. Keep in mind in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to protect yourself.

If the answer is yes, then keep questioning to find out how much coverage the insurance carries, what is and isn’t included in the policy, and who has to pay for any out of pocket expense that the insurance doesn’t cover?

Also make sure you get a copy of the insurance before the event to to be sure the insurance policy really does exist and that it is still active.

You will want to know how long the applicant has been a sports photographer, where they did their photographic training and what diplomas, if any do they have. Do they belong to any photographer associations and if they’ve ever won any photographic competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see proof.

Any reputable and reliable sports photographer should have no problem in providing you with references from previous customers. Make sure you call them and get their take on the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she easy to work with?
  • What were the end results like? Were you happy?
  • Would you use him/her again?

Ask to look at samples of their work from different sporting events. This shouldl give you a better sense of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they really are. Also, by checking out different events you will get a good idea of whether or not the photographer is consistently good…or just lucky every now and then.

Having an assistant or second photographer could possibly make the shoot run a lot more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, right? An assistant or second photographer will also mean have the same pictures taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Also, there will be a little bit of insurance of not missing shots should the equipment of the first photographer break down.

It is important to establish exactly what you are getting for your money before you sign any contracts. How much time will the photographer be at the sporting event? How many photographs will be delivered? How will the proofs be delivered? Will the photographer do any post-production editing of photos to remove any blemishes? Wiil the package include albums or framed photographs?

Also, make sure that you ask how long you have to decide which photographs you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long it takes to receive the final delivery?

It’s really important to ask all these questions and don’t just assume. Doing this means that you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations weren’t met.
