A Few Questions To Ask When Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the photographer answers is no then I would advise you to stop right there. No need to continue the conversation. If you employ a friend or aquaintance to carry out the task, and they trip and injure someone, who is going to cover for the medical bills. Keep in mind in the USA people sue very quickly so you need to protect yourself.

If the answer is yes, then keep questioning to see how much coverage is afforded inside the insurance, what does and doesn’t it cover, and who is liable for any out of pocket expense that aren’t covered?

Also ensure that you get a copy of the insurance prior to the event to to be sure the insurance really does exist and that it is still active.

You ought to know how long the applicant has been a sports photographer, where they did their photgraphy training and what diplomas, if any that they have. Do they belong to any photographer associations or if they’ve ever won any photgraphy competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see evidence.

Any good and reliable sports photographer will have no problem in providing you with references from previous clients. Make sure you call them and ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she a pleasure to work with?
  • What were the end results like? Were you happy?
  • Would you employ this same photographer again?

Request to see samples of their work from different sporting events. This will give you a good idea of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they are. In addition, by viewing different events this will give you an idea of whether or not the photographer is always good…or just lucky every now and then.

Having an assistant or second photographer could help to make the shoot run a lot more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer will also mean have the same shots taken from different angles and therefore showing different effects. Also, there will be a little bit of insurance that they will not miss shots if the equipment of the first photographer breaks down.

It’s vital that you establish exactly what you’re getting for your money before you hire the sports photographer. How much time will the photographer be at the event? How many photographs will be delivered? How will the proofs be delivered? Will the photographer carry out any post-production editing of images to remove any blemishes? Does the package you choose include albums or framed photographs?

Also, make sure that you ask how long you have to decide which photographs you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to get the final delivery?

It’s vital that you ask these questions and don’t make assumptions. Doing this means that you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations weren’t met.
