Questions You Should Ask When You Are Considering Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the answer is no then I would advise you to stop right there. No need to continue the conversation. If you employ a relative or someone you know to carry out the task, and they trip and injure someone, who is going to pay for the medical expenses. Keep in mind in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to protect yourself.

If the answer is yes, then continue questioning to find out how much coverage is afforded inside the insurance, what does and doesn’t it cover, and who has to pay for any out of pocket expense that aren’t covered?

Also ensure that you get a copy of the insurance before the event to to make sure the insurance policy really does exist and that it is still current.

You will need to know how long the person has been doing sports photography, where they carried out their photgraphy training and what certifications, if any that they have. Do they belong to any photographer associations or if they’ve ever won any photographic competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see proof.

A reputable and experienced sports photographer should have no problem in providing you with references from previous clients. Be sure to call them and ask questions such as:

  • Was the photographer a pleasure to work with?
  • What were the final shots like? Were you satisfied?
  • Would you employ him/her again?

Request to see samples of their sports photography from different sporting events. This shouldl give you a good idea of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they really are. Also, by checking out different events this will give you an idea of whether or not the photographer is always good…or just lucky every once in a while.

Having an assistant or second photographer could possibly make the shoot run a lot more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer could mean have the same pictures taken from different angles and therefore showing different effects. Also, there will be a little bit of insurance that they will not miss shots should the equipment of the first photographer break down.

It is very important to establish exactly what you’re getting for your money before you hire the sports photographer. How long will the photographer remain at the sporting event? Exactly how many photographs will you get? How will you receive the proofs? Will the photographer carry out any post-production editing of photographs so any blemishes can be removed? Wiil the package you choose include albums or framed photographs?

In addition, make sure you ask how long you have to decide which photographs you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long it takes to get the final photographs?

Seriously, it’s vital that you ask all these questions and don’t just assume. Then you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations haven’t been met.
