Questions You Should Ask When Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the answer is no then stop right there and look for an alternative photographer. No need to continue the conversation. Should you hire a friend or aquaintance to take the photographs, and they have an accident, who is going to pay for the medical expenses. Remember in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to protect yourself.

If the answer is yes, then keep questioning to see how much coverage the insurance carries, what is and isn’t included in the policy, and who has to pay for any out of pocket expense that aren’t covered?

Also ensure that you get a copy of the insurance before the event to to be sure the insurance really does exist and that it is still current.

You will want to know how long the applicant has been a sports photographer, where they did their photographic training and what qualifications, if any do they have. Ask if they belong to any photographer associations and if they’ve ever won any photgraphy competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see proof.

A good and reliable sports photographer will have no problem in offering references from previous customers. Make sure you call them and ask questions such as:

  • Was the photographer easy to work with?
  • What were the end results like? Were you happy?
  • Would you use him/her again?

Ask to look at samples of their work from different sporting events. This shouldl give you a good idea of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they really are. Also, by checking out different events you will get a good idea of whether or not the photographer is consistently good…or just lucky every once in a while.

By having could help to make the shoot run more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer could mean have the same pictures taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Finally, there will be a a little insurance of not missing shots should the equipment of the first photographer break down.

It is important that you establish exactly what you’re getting for your money before you hire the sports photographer. How long will the photographer remain at the event? How many images will you get? How will the proofs be delivered? Will the photographer carry out any post-production editing of images to remove any blemishes? Does the package you choose include albums or framed photographs?

Also, make sure you ask how long you have to decide which photos you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long it takes to get the final delivery?

Seriously, it’s vital that you ask all these questions and don’t just assume. Doing this means that you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations weren’t met.
