Questions You Should Ask When Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the answer is no then stop right there. No need to continue the conversation. Should you employ a relative or aquaintance to carry out the task, and they cause an accident, who is going to cover for the medical bills. Keep in mind in the USA people sue very quickly so you need to be protected.

If the answer is yes, then continue questioning to see how much coverage the insurance carries, what does and doesn’t it cover, and who is liable for any deductions that aren’t covered?

Also make sure you get a copy of the insurance before the event to to make sure the insurance policy really does exist and that it is still current.

You will want to know how long the person has been doing sports photography, where they carried out their photographic training and what diplomas, if any that they have. Ask if they belong to any photographer associations or if they’ve ever won any photographic competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see proof.

Any good and experienced sports photographer will have no problem in providing you with references from previous customers. Be sure to call them and get their take on the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she a pleasure to work with?
  • What were the end results like? Were you happy?
  • Would you hire this same photographer again?

Request to see samples of their work from different sporting events. This will give you a good sense of the depth of their work and how good they really are. Also, by looking at different events this will give you an idea of whether or not the photographer is consistently good…or just lucky every now and then.

By having could help to make the shoot run a lot more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer could mean have the same shots taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Finally, there will be a little bit of insurance of not missing shots should the equipment of the first photographer break down.

It is important to establish exactly what you’re getting for your money before you sign any contracts. How long will the photographer be at the sporting event? Exactly how many photographs will be delivered? How will you receive the proofs? Will there be post-production editing of photographs to remove any blemishes? Wiil the package that you choose include albums or framed photographs?

Also, make sure you ask how long you have to decide which photos you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to get the final photographs?

Seriously, it’s really important to ask all these questions and don’t just assume. Doing this means that you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations haven’t been met.
