Questions You Should Ask When Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the photographer answers is no then stop right there. No need to continue the discussion. If you employ a relative or someone you know to take the photographs, and they have an accident, who is going to cover for the medical expenses. Remember in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to be protected.

If the answer is yes, then keep questioning to see how much coverage the insurance carries, what does and doesn’t it cover, and who is liable for any deductions that aren’t covered?

Also make sure you get a copy of the insurance before the event to to make sure the insurance really does exist and that it is still current.

You ought to know how long the vendor has been a sports photographer, where they carried out their photgraphy training and what qualifications, if any do they have. Ask if they belong to any photographer associations or if they’ve ever won any photographic competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see evidence.

Any confidant and experienced sports photographer should have no problem in offering references from previous customers. Be sure to call them and ask questions such as:

  • Was the photographer easy to work with?
  • What were the final shots like? Were you happy?
  • Would you use him/her again?

Ask to look at samples of their sports photography from different sporting events. This shouldl give you a good idea of the depth of their work and how good they are. In addition, by checking out different events this will give you an idea of whether or not the photographer is consistently good…or just lucky every now and then.

By having could help to make the shoot run more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, right? An assistant or second photographer will also mean have the same pictures taken from different angles and therefore showing different effects. Also, there will be a a bit of insurance that they will not miss shots should the equipment of the first photographer break down.

It is important that you establish exactly what you’re getting for your money before you hire the sports photographer. How much time will the photographer be at the event? Exactly how many photographs will be delivered? How will you receive the proofs to choose from? Will the photographer do any post-production editing of photos so any blemishes can be removed? Does the package that you choose include albums or framed photographs?

In addition, make sure you ask how long you have to decide which images you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to get the final delivery?

Seriously, it’s vital that you ask all these questions and don’t make assumptions. That way you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations haven’t been met.
