Questions You Should Ask When You Are Considering Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the answer is no then I would advise you to stop right there and look for an alternative photographer. No need to continue the discussion. Should you hire a friend or someone you know to take the photographs, and they have an accident, who is going to pay for the medical bills. Remember in the USA people sue very quickly so you need to protect yourself.

If the answer is yes, then keep questioning to see how much coverage is afforded inside the insurance, what is and isn’t included in the policy, and who has to pay for any out of pocket expense that aren’t covered?

Also make sure you get a copy of the insurance before the event to to make sure the insurance policy really does exist and that it is still active.

You will want to know how long the vendor has been doing sports photography, where they did their photographic training and what qualifications, if any that they have. Ask if they belong to any photographer associations and if they’ve ever won any photographic competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see proof.

Any confidant and reliable sports photographer will have no problem in providing you with references from previous clients. Make sure you call them and get their take on the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she easy to work with?
  • What were the final shots like? Were you happy?
  • Would you employ this same photographer again?

Request to look at samples of their work from different sporting events. This will give you a good idea of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they really are. Also, by checking out different events you will get a good idea of whether or not the photographer is consistently good…or just lucky every now and then.

Having an assistant or second photographer could help to make the shoot run a lot more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer will also mean have the same shots taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Also, there will be a a bit of insurance that they will not miss shots if the equipment of the first photographer breaks down.

It’s important that you establish exactly what it is that you’re getting for your money before you sign any contracts. How much time will the photographer be at the sporting event? Exactly how many images will be delivered? How will the proofs be delivered? Will the photographer do any post-production editing of images to remove any blemishes? Wiil the package you choose include albums or framed photographs?

Also, make sure you ask how long you have to decide which photographs you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long it takes to receive the final delivery?

Seriously, it’s really important to ask all these questions and don’t make assumptions. Then you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations haven’t been met.
