Questions You Should Ask When Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the photographer answers is no then stop right there. No need to continue the conversation. If you hire a friend or aquaintance to take the photographs, and they trip and injure someone, who is going to cover for the medical bills. Remember in the USA people sue very quickly so you need to be protected.

If the answer is yes, then keep asking questions to find out how much coverage the insurance carries, what does and doesn’t it cover, and who has to pay for any out of pocket expense that the insurance doesn’t cover?

Also make sure you get a copy of the insurance prior to the event to to be sure the insurance policy really does exist and that it is still active.

You will need to know how long the vendor has been a sports photographer, where they did their photgraphy training and what certifications, if any that they have. Ask if they belong to any photographer associations and if they’ve ever won any photgraphy competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see proof.

A reputable and experienced sports photographer will have no problem in providing you with references from previous clients. Make sure you call them and get their opinons of the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she easy to work with?
  • What were the final shots like? Were you satisfied?
  • Would you use him/her again?

Ask to see samples of their sports photography from different sporting events. This will give you a good sense of the depth of their work and how good they really are. In addition, by checking out different events this will give you an idea of whether or not the photographer is always good…or just lucky every once in a while.

By having could help to make the shoot run a lot more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer could mean have the same shots taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Finally, there will be a a little insurance that they will not miss shots should the equipment of the first photographer break down.

It is important to establish exactly what it is that you are getting for your money before you hire the sports photographer. How long will the photographer stay at the event? How many photos will you get? How will you receive the proofs? Will there be post-production editing of photos so any blemishes can be removed? Does the package include albums or framed photographs?

In addition, make sure that you ask how long you have to decide which photos you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to receive the final delivery?

Seriously, it’s vital that you ask all these questions and don’t just assume. That way you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations weren’t met.
