A Few Questions To Ask When You Are Considering Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the photographer answers is no then stop right there and look for an alternative photographer. No need to continue the discussion. If you hire a relative or aquaintance to take the photographs, and they cause an accident, who is going to pay for the medical expenses. Remember in the USA people sue very quickly so you need to protect yourself.

If the answer is yes, then keep questioning to see how much coverage the insurance carries, what does and doesn’t it cover, and who is liable for any out of pocket expense that aren’t covered?

Also ensure that you get a copy of the insurance before the event just to be sure the insurance really does exist and that it is still current.

You will want to know how long the person has been a sports photographer, where they did their photgraphy training and what certifications, if any do they have. Do they belong to any photographer associations or if they’ve ever won any photgraphy competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see proof.

A confidant and experienced sports photographer will have no problem in offering references from previous customers. Be sure to call them and get their opinons of the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was the photographer a pleasure to work with?
  • What were the final shots like? Were you happy?
  • Would you employ him/her again?

Ask to look at samples of their work from different events. This will give you a better idea of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they are. In addition, by checking out different events this will give you an idea of whether or not the photographer is always good…or just lucky every once in a while.

Having an assistant or second photographer could possibly make the shoot run more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, right? An assistant or second photographer will also mean have the same shots taken from different angles and therefore showing different effects. Also, there will be a a little insurance of not missing shots should the equipment of the first photographer break down.

It’s very important to establish exactly what it is that you are getting for your money before you sign any contracts. How long will the photographer be at the event? Exactly how many photographs will be delivered? How will you receive the proofs? Will there be post-production editing of images to remove any blemishes? Does the package you choose include albums or framed photographs?

Also, ensure that you ask how long you have to decide which photographs you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long it takes to receive the final delivery?

Seriously, it’s really important to ask all these questions and don’t make assumptions. Doing this means that you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations haven’t been met.
