A Few Questions To Ask When You Are Considering Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the photographer answers is no then I would advise you to stop right there and look for an alternative photographer. No need to continue the conversation. If you employ a friend or someone you know to take the photographs, and they cause an accident, who is going to cover for the medical bills. Remember in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to be protected.

If the answer is yes, then keep asking questions to find out how much coverage the insurance carries, what is and isn’t included in the policy, and who is liable for any deductions that the insurance doesn’t cover?

Also make sure you get a copy of the insurance before the event to to be sure the insurance really does exist and that it is still current.

You will want to know how long the person has been a sports photographer, where they did their photgraphy training and what diplomas, if any do they have. Do they belong to any photographer associations or if they’ve ever won any photographic competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see evidence.

A good and experienced sports photographer should have no problem in providing you with references from previous clients. Make sure you call them and get their take on the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she a pleasure to work with?
  • What were the final shots like? Were you satisfied?
  • Would you employ this same photographer again?

Ask to see samples of their work from different events. This shouldl give you a good idea of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they really are. Also, by checking out different events you will get a good idea of whether or not the photographer is consistently good…or just lucky every once in a while.

By having could possibly make the shoot run more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer could mean have the same pictures taken from different angles and therefore showing different effects. Also, there will be a a bit of insurance that they will not miss shots if the equipment of the first photographer breaks down.

It’s vital that you establish exactly what it is that you are getting for your money before you hire the sports photographer. How long will the photographer stay at the sporting event? How many photos will you get? How will you receive the proofs? Will the photographer do any post-production editing of images so any blemishes can be removed? Wiil the package that you choose include albums or framed photographs?

In addition, ensure that you ask how long you have to decide which photographs you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long it takes to get the final photographs?

It’s really important to ask all these questions and don’t just assume. Then you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations weren’t met.
