Questions You Should Ask When You Are Considering Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the answer is no then stop right there. No need to continue the conversation. Should you hire a relative or someone you know to carry out the task, and they cause an accident, who is going to cover for the medical bills. Remember in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to protect yourself.

If the answer is yes, then continue questioning to see how much coverage is afforded inside the insurance, what is and isn’t included in the policy, and who is liable for any deductions that aren’t covered?

Also ensure that you get a copy of the insurance prior to the event just to make sure the insurance policy really does exist and that it is still active.

You should know how long the person has been doing sports photography, where they carried out their photgraphy training and what diplomas, if any that they have. Ask if they belong to any photographer associations and if they’ve ever won any photgraphy competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see proof.

A good and experienced sports photographer should have no problem in providing you with references from previous clients. Be sure to call them and get their opinons of the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she easy to work with?
  • What were the end results like? Were you happy?
  • Would you hire this same photographer again?

Ask to see samples of their sports photography from different sporting events. This shouldl give you a better idea of the depth of their work and how good they really are. Also, by viewing different events this will give you an idea of whether or not the photographer is consistently good…or just lucky every now and then.

By having could help to make the shoot run a lot more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer will also mean have the same shots taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Also, there will be a a bit of insurance that they will not miss shots if the equipment of the first photographer breaks down.

It’s important to establish exactly what you’re getting for your money before you sign any contracts. How long will the photographer stay at the event? How many photos will you get? How will the proofs be delivered? Will the photographer do any post-production editing of photos so any blemishes can be removed? Does the package you choose include albums or framed photographs?

In addition, ensure you ask how long you have to decide which photographs you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to get the final delivery?

Seriously, it’s vital that you ask these questions and don’t make assumptions. That way you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations haven’t been met.
