A Few Things To Ask When Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the photographer answers is no then stop right there. No need to continue the discussion. If you hire a friend or someone you know to carry out the task, and they have an accident, who is going to pay for the medical expenses. Keep in mind in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to be protected.

If the answer is yes, then continue asking questions to find out how much coverage the insurance carries, what is and isn’t included in the policy, and who has to pay for any deductions that aren’t covered?

Also make sure you get a copy of the insurance before the event just to make sure the insurance policy really does exist and that it is still current.

You should know how long the vendor has been a sports photographer, where they did their photgraphy training and what certifications, if any that they have. Ask if they belong to any photographer associations and if they’ve ever won any photgraphy competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see proof.

A good and experienced sports photographer will have no problem in providing you with references from previous customers. Be sure to call them and get their take on the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she a pleasure to work with?
  • What were the final shots like? Were you happy?
  • Would you hire him/her again?

Request to see samples of their work from different sporting events. This shouldl give you a good idea of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they really are. In addition, by looking at different events you will get a good idea of whether or not the photographer is always good…or just lucky every now and then.

Having an assistant or second photographer could possibly make the shoot run a lot more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer will also mean have the same pictures taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Finally, there will be a a little insurance that they will not miss shots should the equipment of the first photographer break down.

It is important to establish exactly what you are getting for your money before you sign any contracts. How long will the photographer remain at the event? Exactly how many photographs will you get? How will you receive the proofs to choose from? Will the photographer carry out any post-production editing of photos to remove any blemishes? Wiil the package include albums or framed photographs?

In addition, make sure you ask how long you have to decide which photographs you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to receive the final delivery?

It’s really important to ask all these questions and don’t just assume. Then you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations haven’t been met.
