Questions You Should Ask When You Are Considering Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the answer is no then I would advise you to stop right there. No need to continue the conversation. Should you hire a relative or someone you know to take the photographs, and they trip and injure someone, who is going to pay for the medical bills. Remember in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to be protected.

If the answer is yes, then continue questioning to find out how much coverage is afforded inside the insurance, what is and isn’t included in the policy, and who has to pay for any deductions that the insurance doesn’t cover?

Also make sure you get a copy of the insurance prior to the event just to be sure the insurance policy really does exist and that it is still active.

You ought to know how long the vendor has been doing sports photography, where they carried out their photographic training and what qualifications, if any that they have. Do they belong to any photographer associations and if they’ve ever won any photgraphy competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see evidence.

Any reputable and experienced sports photographer will have no problem in providing you with references from previous customers. Make sure you call them and get their opinons of the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was the photographer easy to work with?
  • What were the final shots like? Were you happy?
  • Would you hire this same photographer again?

Ask to see samples of their work from different sporting events. This shouldl give you a better sense of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they are. In addition, by looking at different events you will get a good idea of whether or not the photographer is always good…or just lucky every now and then.

Having an assistant or second photographer could possibly make the shoot run a lot more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer will also mean have the same pictures taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Finally, there will be a little bit of insurance of not missing shots should the equipment of the first photographer break down.

It is important to establish exactly what it is that you are getting for your money before you sign any contracts. How long will the photographer stay at the event? How many photos will be delivered? How will the proofs be delivered? Will there be post-production editing of photographs to remove any blemishes? Does the package you choose include albums or framed photographs?

In addition, make sure that you ask how long you have to decide which photographs you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long it takes to get the final delivery?

Seriously, it’s vital that you ask all these questions and don’t make assumptions. Doing this means that you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations haven’t been met.
