Questions You Should Ask When Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the answer is no then I would advise you to stop right there. No need to continue the discussion. Should you employ a relative or aquaintance to carry out the task, and they trip and injure someone, who is going to pay for the medical bills. Remember in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to protect yourself.

If the answer is yes, then continue questioning to see how much coverage the insurance carries, what does and doesn’t it cover, and who is liable for any deductions that the insurance doesn’t cover?

Also ensure that you get a copy of the insurance before the event to to make sure the insurance policy really does exist and that it is still current.

You will need to know how long the person has been doing sports photography, where they did their photographic training and what diplomas, if any do they have. Do they belong to any photographer associations or if they’ve ever won any photgraphy competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see proof.

Any reputable and experienced sports photographer should have no problem in offering references from previous clients. Be sure to call them and get their take on the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she easy to work with?
  • What were the final shots like? Were you satisfied?
  • Would you use this same photographer again?

Request to see samples of their sports photography from different sporting events. This will give you a good sense of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they really are. Also, by viewing different events this will give you an idea of whether or not the photographer is always good…or just lucky every once in a while.

Having an assistant or second photographer could help to make the shoot run more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer could mean have the same shots taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Finally, there will be a a bit of insurance that they will not miss shots if the equipment of the first photographer breaks down.

It’s vital to establish exactly what it is that you’re getting for your money before you sign any contracts. How much time will the photographer be at the sporting event? How many images will be delivered? How will you receive the proofs? Will the photographer carry out any post-production editing of photographs to remove any blemishes? Wiil the package you choose include albums or framed photographs?

Also, ensure that you ask how long you have to decide which images you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long it takes to get the final photographs?

It’s really important to ask all these questions and don’t just assume. That way you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations haven’t been met.
