A Few Questions To Ask When Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the answer is no then I would advise you to stop right there. No need to continue the discussion. Should you hire a friend or someone you know to take the photographs, and they have an accident, who is going to pay for the medical bills. Remember in the USA people sue very quickly so you need to be protected.

If the answer is yes, then keep asking questions to see how much coverage is afforded inside the insurance, what does and doesn’t it cover, and who has to pay for any out of pocket expense that the insurance doesn’t cover?

Also ensure that you get a copy of the insurance prior to the event just to make sure the insurance policy really does exist and that it is still current.

You should know how long the person has been a sports photographer, where they did their photographic training and what diplomas, if any that they have. Ask if they belong to any photographer associations and if they’ve ever won any photographic competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see evidence.

A confidant and reliable sports photographer should have no problem in offering references from previous customers. Be sure to call them and get their opinons of the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was the photographer easy to work with?
  • What were the final shots like? Were you happy?
  • Would you employ this same photographer again?

Ask to look at samples of their work from different events. This will give you a good sense of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they are. In addition, by viewing different events you will get a good idea of whether or not the photographer is consistently good…or just lucky every once in a while.

Having an assistant or second photographer could help to make the shoot run more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer will also mean have the same pictures taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Also, there will be a a little insurance of not missing shots should the equipment of the first photographer break down.

It’s vital that you establish exactly what you are getting for your money before you sign any contracts. How long will the photographer be at the sporting event? Exactly how many photos will be delivered? How will the proofs be delivered? Will there be post-production editing of photos to remove any blemishes? Does the package you choose include albums or framed photographs?

In addition, make sure you ask how long you have to decide which photos you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long it takes to get the final delivery?

It’s really important to ask all these questions and don’t just assume. Doing this means that you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations weren’t met.
