A Few Things To Ask When You Are Considering Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the photographer answers is no then I would advise you to stop right there and look for an alternative photographer. No need to continue the conversation. Should you hire a relative or aquaintance to carry out the task, and they trip and injure someone, who is going to cover for the medical bills. Remember in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to protect yourself.

If the answer is yes, then keep asking questions to find out how much coverage is afforded inside the insurance, what does and doesn’t it cover, and who has to pay for any out of pocket expense that aren’t covered?

Also make sure you get a copy of the insurance prior to the event just to make sure the insurance really does exist and that it is still current.

You will need to know how long the person has been a sports photographer, where they did their photographic training and what certifications, if any do they have. Do they belong to any photographer associations or if they’ve ever won any photgraphy competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see evidence.

Any reputable and experienced sports photographer will have no problem in offering references from previous customers. Be sure to call them and get their opinons of the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she easy to work with?
  • What were the end results like? Were you happy?
  • Would you use this same photographer again?

Request to see samples of their sports photography from different events. This will give you a good sense of the depth of their work and how good they really are. In addition, by checking out different events you will get a good idea of whether or not the photographer is consistently good…or just lucky every once in a while.

Having an assistant or second photographer could possibly make the shoot run more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, right? An assistant or second photographer will also mean have the same shots taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Also, there will be a a bit of insurance that they will not miss shots if the equipment of the first photographer breaks down.

It is very important that you establish exactly what you’re getting for your money before you sign any contracts. How long will the photographer be at the event? How many photos will be delivered? How will the proofs be delivered? Will there be post-production editing of photos so any blemishes can be removed? Wiil the package include albums or framed photographs?

Also, make sure you ask how long you have to decide which photos you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long it takes to get the final delivery?

It’s vital that you ask these questions and don’t make assumptions. That way you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations weren’t met.
