Questions You Should Ask When You Are Considering Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the answer is no then I would advise you to stop right there. No need to continue the discussion. Should you hire a friend or aquaintance to take the photographs, and they have an accident, who is going to pay for the medical expenses. Remember in the USA people sue very quickly so you need to protect yourself.

If the answer is yes, then keep asking questions to find out how much coverage the insurance carries, what is and isn’t included in the policy, and who has to pay for any deductions that aren’t covered?

Also make sure you get a copy of the insurance prior to the event just to make sure the insurance policy really does exist and that it is still current.

You should know how long the person has been a sports photographer, where they carried out their photgraphy training and what certifications, if any do they have. Do they belong to any photographer associations and if they’ve ever won any photgraphy competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see evidence.

A confidant and reliable sports photographer will have no problem in offering references from previous clients. Make sure you call them and get their opinons of the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was the photographer a pleasure to work with?
  • What were the end results like? Were you satisfied?
  • Would you use this same photographer again?

Ask to look at samples of their sports photography from different sporting events. This shouldl give you a good idea of the depth of their work and how good they really are. In addition, by viewing different events you will get a good idea of whether or not the photographer is always good…or just lucky every now and then.

By having could possibly make the shoot run more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, right? An assistant or second photographer could mean have the same pictures taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Also, there will be a a little insurance of not missing shots should the equipment of the first photographer break down.

It’s very important that you establish exactly what it is that you are getting for your money before you hire the sports photographer. How long will the photographer stay at the sporting event? How many photos will be delivered? How will you receive the proofs? Will the photographer carry out any post-production editing of images to remove any blemishes? Does the package you choose include albums or framed photographs?

In addition, make sure you ask how long you have to decide which photographs you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to receive the final delivery?

It’s really important to ask all these questions and don’t just assume. That way you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations haven’t been met.
