Questions You Should Ask When You Are Considering Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the photographer answers is no then stop right there and look for an alternative photographer. No need to continue the discussion. Should you employ a relative or someone you know to take the photographs, and they trip and injure someone, who is going to cover for the medical expenses. Remember in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to be protected.

If the answer is yes, then keep asking questions to find out how much coverage is afforded inside the insurance, what does and doesn’t it cover, and who is liable for any out of pocket expense that the insurance doesn’t cover?

Also ensure that you get a copy of the insurance prior to the event just to make sure the insurance really does exist and that it is still current.

You will want to know how long the person has been a sports photographer, where they carried out their photgraphy training and what certifications, if any that they have. Do they belong to any photographer associations and if they’ve ever won any photgraphy competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see evidence.

A good and experienced sports photographer will have no problem in providing you with references from previous clients. Make sure you call them and ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she easy to work with?
  • What were the final shots like? Were you happy?
  • Would you employ him/her again?

Request to look at samples of their sports photography from different events. This shouldl give you a good idea of the depth of their work and how good they are. Also, by checking out different events this will give you an idea of whether or not the photographer is consistently good…or just lucky every once in a while.

Having an assistant or second photographer could help to make the shoot run a lot more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, right? An assistant or second photographer could mean have the same pictures taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Also, there will be a a little insurance that they will not miss shots should the equipment of the first photographer break down.

It’s important to establish exactly what it is that you’re getting for your money before you hire the sports photographer. How much time will the photographer be at the event? Exactly how many images will you get? How will the proofs be delivered? Will there be post-production editing of photographs so any blemishes can be removed? Wiil the package you choose include albums or framed photographs?

Also, ensure you ask how long you have to decide which photos you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to receive the final photographs?

Seriously, it’s really important to ask these questions and don’t just assume. Then you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations weren’t met.
