Questions You Should Ask When Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the answer is no then stop right there and look for an alternative photographer. No need to continue the discussion. If you hire a friend or someone you know to take the photographs, and they have an accident, who is going to pay for the medical expenses. Remember in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to be protected.

If the answer is yes, then keep questioning to see how much coverage the insurance carries, what does and doesn’t it cover, and who has to pay for any out of pocket expense that aren’t covered?

Also ensure that you get a copy of the insurance prior to the event to to be sure the insurance really does exist and that it is still current.

You should know how long the applicant has been a sports photographer, where they carried out their photographic training and what certifications, if any do they have. Do they belong to any photographer associations and if they’ve ever won any photgraphy competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see proof.

Any good and reliable sports photographer should have no problem in offering references from previous clients. Make sure you call them and get their opinons of the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she a pleasure to work with?
  • What were the end results like? Were you happy?
  • Would you hire him/her again?

Ask to see samples of their work from different events. This shouldl give you a better idea of the depth of their work and how good they are. Also, by viewing different events you will get a good idea of whether or not the photographer is consistently good…or just lucky every now and then.

Having an assistant or second photographer could possibly make the shoot run a lot more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer will also mean have the same shots taken from different angles and therefore showing different effects. Finally, there will be a little bit of insurance of not missing shots should the equipment of the first photographer break down.

It is very important to establish exactly what you are getting for your money before you sign any contracts. How long will the photographer be at the event? How many images will be delivered? How will you receive the proofs to choose from? Will there be post-production editing of images so any blemishes can be removed? Does the package you choose include albums or framed photographs?

Also, make sure you ask how long you have to decide which photographs you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to receive the final delivery?

It’s really important to ask these questions and don’t just assume. That way you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations haven’t been met.
