A Few Things To Ask When You Are Considering Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the answer is no then I would advise you to stop right there and look for an alternative photographer. No need to continue the discussion. Should you hire a relative or aquaintance to take the photographs, and they trip and injure someone, who is going to pay for the medical expenses. Remember in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to be protected.

If the answer is yes, then keep questioning to see how much coverage the insurance carries, what is and isn’t included in the policy, and who has to pay for any deductions that the insurance doesn’t cover?

Also make sure you get a copy of the insurance prior to the event just to be sure the insurance really does exist and that it is still active.

You will want to know how long the person has been a sports photographer, where they carried out their photgraphy training and what certifications, if any do they have. Ask if they belong to any photographer associations and if they’ve ever won any photographic competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see evidence.

A confidant and reliable sports photographer should have no problem in offering references from previous customers. Be sure to call them and ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she easy to work with?
  • What were the end results like? Were you satisfied?
  • Would you employ him/her again?

Ask to look at samples of their work from different sporting events. This shouldl give you a good sense of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they really are. In addition, by checking out different events you will get a good idea of whether or not the photographer is always good…or just lucky every once in a while.

By having could possibly make the shoot run a lot more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer will also mean have the same pictures taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Also, there will be a a little insurance of not missing shots should the equipment of the first photographer break down.

It’s very important that you establish exactly what you’re getting for your money before you hire the sports photographer. How long will the photographer remain at the event? Exactly how many photographs will be delivered? How will you receive the proofs to choose from? Will there be post-production editing of photographs to remove any blemishes? Does the package that you choose include albums or framed photographs?

Also, make sure that you ask how long you have to decide which photos you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to receive the final delivery?

It’s really important to ask all these questions and don’t just assume. That way you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations haven’t been met.
