Questions You Should Ask When You Are Considering Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the photographer answers is no then stop right there. No need to continue the discussion. Should you employ a friend or aquaintance to take the photographs, and they trip and injure someone, who is going to pay for the medical bills. Keep in mind in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to protect yourself.

If the answer is yes, then keep questioning to see how much coverage the insurance carries, what does and doesn’t it cover, and who has to pay for any out of pocket expense that the insurance doesn’t cover?

Also make sure you get a copy of the insurance before the event just to make sure the insurance policy really does exist and that it is still active.

You will want to know how long the vendor has been doing sports photography, where they carried out their photographic training and what qualifications, if any that they have. Ask if they belong to any photographer associations or if they’ve ever won any photographic competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see proof.

A confidant and experienced sports photographer will have no problem in providing you with references from previous customers. Make sure you call them and ask questions such as:

  • Was the photographer easy to work with?
  • What were the end results like? Were you satisfied?
  • Would you employ him/her again?

Ask to look at samples of their work from different events. This shouldl give you a better sense of the depth of their work and how good they really are. Also, by looking at different events you will get a good idea of whether or not the photographer is always good…or just lucky every now and then.

By having could help to make the shoot run a lot more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, right? An assistant or second photographer could mean have the same shots taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Also, there will be a a little insurance that they will not miss shots if the equipment of the first photographer breaks down.

It’s important that you establish exactly what you’re getting for your money before you hire the sports photographer. How long will the photographer be at the event? How many photographs will be delivered? How will you receive the proofs to choose from? Will the photographer do any post-production editing of photos so any blemishes can be removed? Wiil the package that you choose include albums or framed photographs?

Also, make sure you ask how long you have to decide which photographs you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long it takes to get the final photographs?

It’s vital that you ask these questions and don’t make assumptions. Doing this means that you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations haven’t been met.
