A Few Questions To Ask When You Are Considering Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the photographer answers is no then I would advise you to stop right there. No need to continue the conversation. If you employ a friend or aquaintance to carry out the task, and they cause an accident, who is going to cover for the medical bills. Remember in the USA people sue very quickly so you need to protect yourself.

If the answer is yes, then keep questioning to see how much coverage the insurance carries, what is and isn’t included in the policy, and who has to pay for any deductions that aren’t covered?

Also make sure you get a copy of the insurance prior to the event to to be sure the insurance policy really does exist and that it is still current.

You should know how long the vendor has been a sports photographer, where they carried out their photgraphy training and what diplomas, if any do they have. Ask if they belong to any photographer associations or if they’ve ever won any photographic competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see proof.

Any confidant and experienced sports photographer will have no problem in offering references from previous clients. Be sure to call them and get their take on the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she easy to work with?
  • What were the final shots like? Were you happy?
  • Would you employ this same photographer again?

Request to look at samples of their sports photography from different events. This shouldl give you a better idea of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they are. Also, by viewing different events this will give you an idea of whether or not the photographer is always good…or just lucky every once in a while.

By having could possibly make the shoot run a lot more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer will also mean have the same shots taken from different angles and therefore showing different effects. Finally, there will be a little bit of insurance that they will not miss shots should the equipment of the first photographer break down.

It is vital that you establish exactly what it is that you’re getting for your money before you hire the sports photographer. How long will the photographer be at the sporting event? Exactly how many photos will you get? How will the proofs be delivered? Will there be post-production editing of images so any blemishes can be removed? Does the package you choose include albums or framed photographs?

Also, ensure that you ask how long you have to decide which photos you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to get the final delivery?

It’s really important to ask all these questions and don’t make assumptions. Doing this means that you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations weren’t met.
