Questions You Should Ask When Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the photographer answers is no then stop right there and look for an alternative photographer. No need to continue the discussion. Should you hire a relative or someone you know to carry out the task, and they cause an accident, who is going to cover for the medical bills. Remember in the USA people sue very quickly so you need to protect yourself.

If the answer is yes, then continue asking questions to find out how much coverage is afforded inside the insurance, what is and isn’t included in the policy, and who is liable for any out of pocket expense that the insurance doesn’t cover?

Also ensure that you get a copy of the insurance before the event to to make sure the insurance policy really does exist and that it is still active.

You will need to know how long the person has been doing sports photography, where they did their photgraphy training and what diplomas, if any do they have. Ask if they belong to any photographer associations and if they’ve ever won any photgraphy competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see evidence.

Any good and experienced sports photographer should have no problem in offering references from previous customers. Be sure to call them and get their take on the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she easy to work with?
  • What were the final shots like? Were you satisfied?
  • Would you hire him/her again?

Request to see samples of their sports photography from different sporting events. This will give you a good sense of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they really are. Also, by looking at different events you will get a good idea of whether or not the photographer is consistently good…or just lucky every now and then.

Having an assistant or second photographer could possibly make the shoot run a lot more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, right? An assistant or second photographer will also mean have the same pictures taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Finally, there will be a a little insurance that they will not miss shots if the equipment of the first photographer breaks down.

It is vital to establish exactly what you are getting for your money before you sign any contracts. How long will the photographer remain at the sporting event? Exactly how many photographs will you get? How will you receive the proofs to choose from? Will the photographer do any post-production editing of images so any blemishes can be removed? Does the package that you choose include albums or framed photographs?

Also, make sure that you ask how long you have to decide which photographs you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to receive the final delivery?

Seriously, it’s vital that you ask these questions and don’t make assumptions. Doing this means that you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations weren’t met.
