A Few Things To Ask When You Are Considering Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the answer is no then stop right there. No need to continue the conversation. If you employ a friend or aquaintance to take the photographs, and they cause an accident, who is going to pay for the medical expenses. Remember in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to be protected.

If the answer is yes, then keep questioning to see how much coverage is afforded inside the insurance, what does and doesn’t it cover, and who has to pay for any out of pocket expense that the insurance doesn’t cover?

Also ensure that you get a copy of the insurance before the event just to make sure the insurance really does exist and that it is still current.

You will need to know how long the applicant has been doing sports photography, where they did their photographic training and what qualifications, if any that they have. Ask if they belong to any photographer associations or if they’ve ever won any photgraphy competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see evidence.

Any confidant and reliable sports photographer should have no problem in offering references from previous clients. Make sure you call them and get their opinons of the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she a pleasure to work with?
  • What were the final shots like? Were you satisfied?
  • Would you use him/her again?

Request to look at samples of their work from different sporting events. This shouldl give you a better idea of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they really are. In addition, by viewing different events this will give you an idea of whether or not the photographer is always good…or just lucky every once in a while.

Having an assistant or second photographer could help to make the shoot run a lot more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer could mean have the same shots taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Also, there will be a a bit of insurance of not missing shots should the equipment of the first photographer break down.

It’s important to establish exactly what you are getting for your money before you hire the sports photographer. How long will the photographer remain at the event? Exactly how many images will you get? How will you receive the proofs? Will there be post-production editing of photographs so any blemishes can be removed? Wiil the package you choose include albums or framed photographs?

In addition, make sure you ask how long you have to decide which photos you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to receive the final photographs?

It’s vital that you ask these questions and don’t make assumptions. Doing this means that you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations weren’t met.
