A Few Things To Ask When Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the photographer answers is no then stop right there and look for an alternative photographer. No need to continue the conversation. If you hire a relative or someone you know to carry out the task, and they have an accident, who is going to cover for the medical expenses. Keep in mind in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to be protected.

If the answer is yes, then keep questioning to find out how much coverage the insurance carries, what does and doesn’t it cover, and who has to pay for any deductions that the insurance doesn’t cover?

Also ensure that you get a copy of the insurance prior to the event to to be sure the insurance policy really does exist and that it is still active.

You ought to know how long the person has been doing sports photography, where they carried out their photgraphy training and what diplomas, if any do they have. Do they belong to any photographer associations and if they’ve ever won any photgraphy competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see proof.

A reputable and experienced sports photographer will have no problem in offering references from previous clients. Be sure to call them and ask questions such as:

  • Was the photographer easy to work with?
  • What were the end results like? Were you satisfied?
  • Would you hire him/her again?

Ask to see samples of their work from different events. This shouldl give you a better idea of the depth of their work and how good they really are. In addition, by viewing different events this will give you an idea of whether or not the photographer is always good…or just lucky every now and then.

Having an assistant or second photographer could help to make the shoot run more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer will also mean have the same shots taken from different angles and therefore showing different effects. Finally, there will be a little bit of insurance of not missing shots if the equipment of the first photographer breaks down.

It’s very important to establish exactly what it is that you are getting for your money before you hire the sports photographer. How long will the photographer be at the event? Exactly how many photographs will you get? How will the proofs be delivered? Will the photographer do any post-production editing of images to remove any blemishes? Wiil the package you choose include albums or framed photographs?

In addition, make sure you ask how long you have to decide which images you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to receive the final delivery?

It’s really important to ask all these questions and don’t make assumptions. That way you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations weren’t met.
