A Few Things To Ask When You Are Considering Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the photographer answers is no then I would advise you to stop right there. No need to continue the conversation. If you hire a friend or aquaintance to take the photographs, and they have an accident, who is going to cover for the medical bills. Remember in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to protect yourself.

If the answer is yes, then keep questioning to see how much coverage the insurance carries, what does and doesn’t it cover, and who is liable for any out of pocket expense that aren’t covered?

Also ensure that you get a copy of the insurance before the event to to be sure the insurance really does exist and that it is still current.

You will want to know how long the vendor has been doing sports photography, where they carried out their photographic training and what diplomas, if any do they have. Do they belong to any photographer associations and if they’ve ever won any photgraphy competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see proof.

Any confidant and reliable sports photographer will have no problem in offering references from previous clients. Make sure you call them and ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she a pleasure to work with?
  • What were the final shots like? Were you satisfied?
  • Would you hire this same photographer again?

Ask to see samples of their work from different events. This will give you a better idea of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they are. Also, by looking at different events you will get a good idea of whether or not the photographer is consistently good…or just lucky every now and then.

By having could possibly make the shoot run a lot more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, right? An assistant or second photographer could mean have the same pictures taken from different angles and therefore showing different effects. Finally, there will be a a little insurance of not missing shots should the equipment of the first photographer break down.

It’s important to establish exactly what it is that you’re getting for your money before you hire the sports photographer. How long will the photographer be at the sporting event? How many photos will be delivered? How will the proofs be delivered? Will the photographer do any post-production editing of images to remove any blemishes? Wiil the package that you choose include albums or framed photographs?

Also, ensure you ask how long you have to decide which photographs you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long it takes to receive the final photographs?

Seriously, it’s vital that you ask all these questions and don’t just assume. Doing this means that you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations weren’t met.
