Questions You Should Ask When Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the photographer answers is no then I would advise you to stop right there and look for an alternative photographer. No need to continue the conversation. If you employ a friend or someone you know to carry out the task, and they cause an accident, who is going to cover for the medical expenses. Keep in mind in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to be protected.

If the answer is yes, then keep questioning to see how much coverage is afforded inside the insurance, what is and isn’t included in the policy, and who has to pay for any deductions that aren’t covered?

Also make sure you get a copy of the insurance prior to the event just to be sure the insurance really does exist and that it is still current.

You ought to know how long the vendor has been doing sports photography, where they did their photgraphy training and what qualifications, if any do they have. Ask if they belong to any photographer associations and if they’ve ever won any photographic competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see evidence.

A reputable and reliable sports photographer will have no problem in offering references from previous customers. Make sure you call them and get their take on the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was the photographer easy to work with?
  • What were the final shots like? Were you satisfied?
  • Would you hire this same photographer again?

Request to see samples of their work from different sporting events. This will give you a better sense of the depth of their work and how good they really are. Also, by viewing different events this will give you an idea of whether or not the photographer is consistently good…or just lucky every now and then.

Having an assistant or second photographer could help to make the shoot run more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer will also mean have the same pictures taken from different angles and therefore showing different effects. Finally, there will be a little bit of insurance that they will not miss shots if the equipment of the first photographer breaks down.

It is important that you establish exactly what it is that you’re getting for your money before you hire the sports photographer. How long will the photographer stay at the event? How many photos will be delivered? How will you receive the proofs? Will the photographer do any post-production editing of photos to remove any blemishes? Does the package that you choose include albums or framed photographs?

In addition, ensure you ask how long you have to decide which images you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to get the final photographs?

It’s really important to ask these questions and don’t make assumptions. That way you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations haven’t been met.
