A Few Things To Ask When Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the photographer answers is no then stop right there and look for an alternative photographer. No need to continue the discussion. If you employ a friend or someone you know to take the photographs, and they trip and injure someone, who is going to pay for the medical bills. Remember in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to protect yourself.

If the answer is yes, then keep asking questions to find out how much coverage is afforded inside the insurance, what is and isn’t included in the policy, and who has to pay for any out of pocket expense that aren’t covered?

Also make sure you get a copy of the insurance before the event to to make sure the insurance policy really does exist and that it is still active.

You should know how long the person has been doing sports photography, where they did their photgraphy training and what diplomas, if any that they have. Ask if they belong to any photographer associations and if they’ve ever won any photgraphy competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see evidence.

Any reputable and experienced sports photographer should have no problem in providing you with references from previous customers. Be sure to call them and ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she a pleasure to work with?
  • What were the final shots like? Were you satisfied?
  • Would you employ him/her again?

Request to look at samples of their sports photography from different sporting events. This will give you a better idea of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they are. Also, by viewing different events you will get a good idea of whether or not the photographer is always good…or just lucky every once in a while.

By having could help to make the shoot run a lot more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer could mean have the same shots taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Also, there will be a a little insurance of not missing shots if the equipment of the first photographer breaks down.

It’s vital that you establish exactly what you’re getting for your money before you hire the sports photographer. How long will the photographer be at the sporting event? How many photographs will be delivered? How will you receive the proofs? Will the photographer do any post-production editing of photographs to remove any blemishes? Does the package that you choose include albums or framed photographs?

Also, make sure you ask how long you have to decide which photographs you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long it takes to receive the final photographs?

It’s vital that you ask these questions and don’t just assume. Then you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations haven’t been met.
