Questions You Should Ask When Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the answer is no then stop right there and look for an alternative photographer. No need to continue the conversation. If you employ a relative or someone you know to carry out the task, and they have an accident, who is going to cover for the medical bills. Remember in the USA people sue very quickly so you need to be protected.

If the answer is yes, then continue questioning to find out how much coverage is afforded inside the insurance, what does and doesn’t it cover, and who is liable for any out of pocket expense that the insurance doesn’t cover?

Also make sure you get a copy of the insurance before the event just to be sure the insurance really does exist and that it is still current.

You will want to know how long the vendor has been doing sports photography, where they did their photographic training and what qualifications, if any that they have. Ask if they belong to any photographer associations or if they’ve ever won any photographic competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see proof.

Any confidant and reliable sports photographer should have no problem in providing you with references from previous clients. Make sure you call them and get their opinons of the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she a pleasure to work with?
  • What were the end results like? Were you satisfied?
  • Would you employ this same photographer again?

Ask to look at samples of their work from different events. This will give you a good sense of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they are. Also, by viewing different events this will give you an idea of whether or not the photographer is consistently good…or just lucky every once in a while.

Having an assistant or second photographer could help to make the shoot run a lot more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer could mean have the same shots taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Also, there will be a a little insurance of not missing shots if the equipment of the first photographer breaks down.

It is vital that you establish exactly what it is that you are getting for your money before you hire the sports photographer. How long will the photographer remain at the event? How many photos will you get? How will you receive the proofs to choose from? Will the photographer carry out any post-production editing of photos to remove any blemishes? Does the package include albums or framed photographs?

Also, ensure that you ask how long you have to decide which images you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long it takes to get the final delivery?

Seriously, it’s really important to ask these questions and don’t just assume. Doing this means that you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations weren’t met.
