Questions You Should Ask When You Are Considering Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the answer is no then I would advise you to stop right there. No need to continue the conversation. If you hire a friend or aquaintance to carry out the task, and they have an accident, who is going to cover for the medical expenses. Keep in mind in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to be protected.

If the answer is yes, then keep asking questions to see how much coverage the insurance carries, what does and doesn’t it cover, and who has to pay for any deductions that the insurance doesn’t cover?

Also make sure you get a copy of the insurance before the event just to be sure the insurance policy really does exist and that it is still active.

You will want to know how long the vendor has been doing sports photography, where they carried out their photographic training and what qualifications, if any do they have. Do they belong to any photographer associations or if they’ve ever won any photgraphy competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see proof.

A confidant and reliable sports photographer will have no problem in providing you with references from previous customers. Make sure you call them and ask questions such as:

  • Was the photographer a pleasure to work with?
  • What were the end results like? Were you happy?
  • Would you hire this same photographer again?

Request to see samples of their work from different sporting events. This shouldl give you a good sense of the depth of the photographer’s work and how good they really are. In addition, by checking out different events you will get a good idea of whether or not the photographer is consistently good…or just lucky every now and then.

Having an assistant or second photographer could help to make the shoot run a lot more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer will also mean have the same pictures taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Finally, there will be a little bit of insurance that they will not miss shots if the equipment of the first photographer breaks down.

It is important to establish exactly what you are getting for your money before you sign any contracts. How long will the photographer be at the event? Exactly how many photographs will be delivered? How will the proofs be delivered? Will there be post-production editing of images to remove any blemishes? Does the package you choose include albums or framed photographs?

Also, make sure you ask how long you have to decide which images you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to get the final delivery?

Seriously, it’s vital that you ask all these questions and don’t make assumptions. That way you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations haven’t been met.
