A Few Things To Ask When You Are Considering Hiring a Sports Photographer

If the photographer answers is no then stop right there and look for an alternative photographer. No need to continue the discussion. If you employ a relative or aquaintance to carry out the task, and they trip and injure someone, who is going to pay for the medical expenses. Remember in the United States people sue very quickly so you need to be protected.

If the answer is yes, then keep asking questions to see how much coverage the insurance carries, what does and doesn’t it cover, and who has to pay for any deductions that the insurance doesn’t cover?

Also make sure you get a copy of the insurance prior to the event to to make sure the insurance really does exist and that it is still current.

You should know how long the person has been doing sports photography, where they did their photgraphy training and what certifications, if any do they have. Do they belong to any photographer associations or if they’ve ever won any photographic competitions. If the answer is yes, always ask to see proof.

Any confidant and experienced sports photographer should have no problem in offering references from previous clients. Make sure you call them and get their opinons of the photographer. Ask questions such as:

  • Was he/she easy to work with?
  • What were the end results like? Were you happy?
  • Would you hire this same photographer again?

Request to see samples of their work from different events. This shouldl give you a better idea of the depth of their work and how good they really are. In addition, by checking out different events you will get a good idea of whether or not the photographer is always good…or just lucky every once in a while.

Having an assistant or second photographer could possibly make the shoot run more smoothly. Two heads are better than one, and all that! An assistant or second photographer could mean have the same shots taken from different angles and therefore displaying different effects. Also, there will be a a little insurance that they will not miss shots should the equipment of the first photographer break down.

It’s vital that you establish exactly what you’re getting for your money before you sign any contracts. How much time will the photographer be at the event? Exactly how many photographs will you get? How will the proofs be delivered? Will there be post-production editing of photographs so any blemishes can be removed? Does the package that you choose include albums or framed photographs?

In addition, ensure that you ask how long you have to decide which photos you would like delivered after seeing the proofs, and how long does it take to receive the final delivery?

Seriously, it’s really important to ask all these questions and don’t make assumptions. Doing this means that you can avoid disappointment and arguments because your expectations haven’t been met.
