Tips on choosing a professional pet photographer

1. Look for a specialist photographer

When choosing a pet photographer, you actually want to pick somebody who likes and is comfortable with your pet – someone who dislikes cats, but loves dogs is not a great option to shoot Kitty. By the same token, a love of dogs does not imply your photographer is comfortable or has experience shooting horse photography in an arena. Seek out a photographer who has experience shooting your species of pet, let them know what you’re searching for in your pet shoot, and check out their online portfolio to look for experience and style compatibility.

Check out a photographer’s website to see their previous work, and after that interview them prior to making an appointment. Ask about the creative process and how the actual session will unfold. Make sure you feel comfortable with the photographer before booking the actual shoot. If you do not click with him or her, odds are your pet will not either.

2. Determine the deliverables

Discuss prior to the shoot with your pet photographer on what your objectives are for the photography session and exactly what you mean to do with the images. Communicating where and how you plan to utilize the photos can assist your photographer get the photos that you are searching for and make sure that the final deliverables fulfill your expectations.

3. Scheduling the shoot

When shooting outdoors consider the comfort of your pet and aim to arrange your shoot with favorable lighting conditions – usually late afternoon. By minimizing the amount of equipment and lighting your photographer requires on the shoot, you also assist to lower the stress the photo shoot may cause for your animal. When shooting in a studio, bring a favorite toy or other pet item. And in all cases, take treats with you.

4. After the photography session

Most pet pictures will be provided digitally. The pet photographer will normally let you preview the proofs so you can identify your favorite photographs and you therefore don’t wind up paying for photos that you don’t want. Make certain to ask if the photographs will be provided untouched, or will the photographer use photographic software to do some post-production touch up work (where the photographer fixes lighting, color grades or eliminates imperfections, etc from the photos).

How much does Pet Photography cost?

Animal photography rates will need to be set based on the kind of photography (studio or in the field) needed and the level of equipment and skill needed to get the shot for the customer. Aspects that will figure out the cost will be experience, equipment, travel, threats, environmental elements and the specific client requirements. Some photographer will charge per session and others may charge by print. Discuss with the photographer about their pay structure and how they break it down. And make sure to discuss how they want to handle the photograph rights as buying full rights to the images will add to the final cost.

Look for a special offer if you can. Professional pet photography can be costly. If you have limited funds, keep your eye out for seasonal special offers. Many professional photographers are moving into pet photography and want to bring in new clients; also particular times of year business might be sluggish for those both developed and brand-new pet photographers. However, always keep quality in mind and do your due diligence before putting down any loan, no matter how excellent the offer might sound.
