Tips on choosing a professional pet photographer

1. Look for a specialist photographer

When picking a pet photographer, you really should choose somebody who enjoys and is comfortable with your pet – somebody who is allergic to cats, but loves dogs is not a great choice to photograph Kitty. By the same token, a love of dogs doesn’t imply your photographer is comfortable or has experience shooting horse photography in an arena. Seek out a photographer who has experience shooting your species of pet, make them understand what you’re looking for in your pet shoot, and check out their online portfolio to check for experience and style compatibility.

Check out a photographer’s website to see their previous work, and then interview him or her prior to making a consultation. Inquire about the creative process and how the actual session will unfold. Ensure you feel comfortable with the photographer before booking the actual shoot. If you don’t click with them, odds are your pet will not either.

2. Choose the deliverables

Discuss before the shoot with your pet photographer on what your goals are for the photography session and exactly what you mean to do with the photos. Interacting where and how you will use the images can assist your photographer get the photos that you are looking for and guarantee that the final deliverables fulfill your expectations.

3. Scheduling the session

When shooting outdoors think about the comfort of your pet and attempt to schedule your shoot with favorable lighting conditions – usually late afternoon. By reducing the amount of equipment and lighting your photographer needs on the shoot, you also assist to decrease the stress the photo shoot might cause for your animal. When shooting in a studio, bring a favorite toy or other pet item. And in all cases, bring treats with you.

4. After the photography session

Most pet images will be delivered digitally. The pet photographer will generally let you preview the proofs so you can determine your preferred photographs and you for that reason don’t end up paying for photos that you do not want to keep. Make certain to ask if the photographs will be delivered untouched, or will the photographer use software to do some post-production touch up work (where the photographer corrects lighting, color grades or removes imperfections, etc from the photos).

Just how much does Pet Photography cost?

Animal photography prices will have to be set based on the type of photography (studio or in the field) required and the level of equipment and ability needed to get the shot for the client. Elements that will determine the cost will be experience, equipment, travel, hazards, environmental elements and the specific client requirements. Some photographer will charge per session and others might charge by print. Discuss with the photographer about their pay structure and how it breaks down. And make sure to discuss how they want to manage the photograph rights as buying complete rights to the images will add to the final cost.

Look for a deal if you can. Professional pet photography can be pricey. If you have limited funds, keep your eye out for a discount. Many professional photographers are moving into pet photography and wish to attract new customers; also certain times of year business might be sluggish for those both established and new pet photographers. However, always keep quality in mind and do your research before putting down any loan, no matter how great the offer might sound.
