When selecting a pet photographer, you really should select someone who enjoys and is comfortable with your pet – somebody who is allergic to cats, but enjoys dogs is not a good option to photograph Kitty. By the same token, a love of dogs does not suggest your photographer is comfortable or has experience shooting horse photography in an arena. Look for a photographer who has experience shooting your species of pet, make them understand exactly what you’re searching for in your pet shoot, and check out their online portfolio to look for experience and style compatibility.

Explore a photographer’s website to see their previous work, then interview him or her prior to scheduling an appointment. Inquire about the creative process and how the actual session will unfold. Make certain you feel totally at ease with the photographer prior to booking the actual shoot. If you don’t click with them, chances are your pet will not either.

2. Determine the deliverables

Discuss prior to the shoot with your pet photographer on what your objectives are for the photography session and what you mean to do with the images. Communicating where and how you plan to utilize the images can assist your photographer get the shots that you’re searching for and make sure that the final deliverables satisfy your expectations.

3. Scheduling the session

When shooting outdoors consider the comfort of your animal and try to arrange your shoot with favorable lighting conditions – normally late afternoon. By reducing the amount of equipment and lighting your photographer requires on the shoot, you also assist to decrease the stress the photo shoot may cause for your animal. When shooting in a studio, bring a preferred toy or other pet item. And in all cases, take treats with you.

4. After the photography session

Most pet photos will be delivered digitally. The pet photographer will usually let you preview the proofs so you can identify your favorite photographs and you therefore do not wind up paying for photos that you do not want. Make sure to ask if the photographs will be provided unedited, or will the photographer use photographic software to do some post-production retouch work (where the photographer fixes lighting, color grades or gets rid of imperfections, etc from the photos).

How much does Pet Photography cost?

Animal photography pricing will have to be set based upon the kind of photography (studio or in the field) required and the level of equipment and skill needed to get the shot for the client. Factors that will identify the rate will be experience, equipment, travel, risks, environmental aspects and the specific customer requirements. Some photographer will charge per session and others may charge by print. Discuss with the photographer about their pay structure and how it breaks down. And be sure to discuss how they wish to handle the photograph rights as buying full rights to the images will add to the cost.

Try to find a deal if you can. Professional pet photography can be costly. If you have limited funds, keep your eye out for a discount. Many professional photographers are moving into pet photography and want to bring in new clients; also particular times of year business might be sluggish for those both developed and brand-new pet photographers. Always keep quality in mind and do your research before putting down any cash, no matter how excellent the offer might sound.
