Tips on picking a professional pet photographer

1. Look for a specialist photographer

When selecting a pet photographer, you actually want to choose someone who enjoys and is comfortable with your pet – someone who dislikes cats, but likes dogs is not a good option to photograph Kitty. By the same token, a love of dogs doesn’t imply your photographer is comfortable or has experience shooting horse photography in an arena. Seek out a photographer who has experience shooting your type of pet, let them know exactly what you’re searching for in your pet shoot, and check out their online portfolio to check for experience and style compatibility.

Explore a photographer’s website to see their previous work, then interview them prior to making an appointment. Inquire about the creative process and how the actual session will unfold. Make sure you feel totally at ease with the photographer before scheduling the actual shoot. If you do not click with him or her, chances are your pet won’t either.

2. Decide on the deliverables

Discuss before the shoot with your pet photographer on what your objectives are for the photography session and what you intend to do with the images. Communicating where and how you plan to utilize the photos can assist your photographer get the shots that you’re trying to achieve and ensure that the final deliverables fulfill your expectations.

3. Scheduling the session

When shooting outdoors think about the comfort of your pet and aim to schedule your shoot with favorable lighting conditions – usually late afternoon. By decreasing the amount of equipment and lighting your photographer requires on the shoot, you also assist to reduce the tension the photo shoot might trigger for your animal. When shooting in a studio, bring a preferred toy or other pet item. And in all cases, take treats with you.

4. After the photography shoot

Most pet pictures will be delivered digitally. The pet photographer will normally let you preview the proofs so you can identify your favorite photographs and you therefore do not end up paying for pictures that you don’t want to keep. Make sure to ask if the photographs will be provided unedited, or will the photographer use photographic software to do some post-production retouch work (where the photographer fixes lighting, color grades or eliminates imperfections, etc from the photos).

Just how much does Pet Photography cost?

Animal photography prices will need to be set based on the kind of photography (studio or in the field) needed and the level of equipment and skill required to get the shot for the client. Factors that will figure out the price will be experience, equipment, travel, threats, environmental elements and the specific client requirements. Some photographer will charge per session and others might charge by print. Discuss with the photographer about their pay structure and how it breaks down. And make sure to discuss how they want to manage the photograph rights as acquiring complete rights to the images will add to the final cost.

Search for a deal if you can. Professional pet photography can be costly. If you have restricted funds, keep your eye out for seasonal special offers. Many professional photographers are moving into pet photography and want to draw in new customers; also particular times of year business may be slow for those both established and new pet photographers. However, always keep quality in mind and do your research prior to putting down any money, no matter how good the deal might sound.
