Pet photography ranges from photographs of domesticated animals (dogs to cats to birds) to more editorial type shots that strive to capture the appeal of animals (think horse and equine photography) interacting in their natural or domestic environment.

Excellent pet photography seeks to show, creatively, the character of the animal being photographed. These shoots can be carried out in different locations, from studio to on-location. Most pet photographers have their own style and while some might shoot all sorts of animals, certain professional photographers may specialize specific kinds of pets.

Here are 5 good reasons you cannot beat a hiring a professional pet photographer.

1. You cannot replace knowledge and experience

Technological advancements have made top quality photography equipment far more budget friendly for amateur photographers, however amateurs are still amateurs. Professional photographers not only have the camera, lenses, and other complimentary devices needed to get the perfect shot, they have the training and experience to do so too.

2. You cannot beat the creativity of a professional pet photographer

Your pet’s character can shines through in the pictures that you take of him/her. The best pet photographers take into account not only the character of your pet but also his or her way of life.

3. It cannot get any easier

Let the professional crawl around on the ground – or jump in the swimming pool – while you sit back, unwind, and watch the action unfold. You might also grab a couple of tips to improve your pet shooting abilitiy.

4. You cannot beat the end-result

A professional pet photographer also has the know-how to snap the very best images in the least amount of time. They usually charge by the hour and have no desire to waste their time or yours.

5. You can participate in the fun

Most professional pet photographers these days make every effort to capture the bond between you and your pet, resulting in a treasured picture that will definitely hang in a place of importance in your house for several years to come.

Tips on choosing a professional pet photographer

1. Look for a specialist photographer

When choosing a pet photographer, you truly should choose someone who likes and is comfortable with your pet – somebody who dislikes cats, but loves dogs is not a good choice to photograph Kitty. By the same token, a love of dogs does not indicate your photographer is comfortable or has experience shooting horse photography in an arena. Seek out a photographer who has experience shooting your type of pet, let them know exactly what you’re searching for in your pet shoot, and check out their online portfolio to check for experience and style compatibility.

Check out a photographer’s site to see their previous work, and then interview them prior to making a consultation. Inquire about the creative process and how the actual session will unfold. Make sure you feel comfortable with the photographer before booking the actual shoot. If you don’t click with him or her, odds are your pet won’t either.

2. Determine the deliverables

Discuss prior to the shoot with your pet photographer on what your goals are for the photography session and exactly what you mean to do with the photos. Interacting where and how you plan to use the images can assist your photographer get the images that you are searching for and guarantee that the final deliverables satisfy your expectations.

3. Scheduling the shoot

When shooting outdoors consider the comfort of your pet and attempt to arrange your shoot with favorable lighting conditions – normally late afternoon. By reducing the amount of equipment and lighting your photographer requires on the shoot, you also help to reduce the tension the photo shoot might cause for your animal. When shooting in a studio, bring a favorite toy or other pet item. And in all cases, bring treats with you.

4. After the photography session

Most pet photos will be delivered digitally. The pet photographer will normally let you preview the proofs so you can determine your preferred photographs and you therefore do not wind up paying for photographs that you don’t want. Make sure to ask if the photographs will be provided untouched, or will the photographer use software to do some post-production retouch work (where the photographer remedies lighting, color grades or removes blemishes, etc from the photos).

How much does Pet Photography cost?

Animal photography pricing will need to be set based upon the type of photography (studio or in the field) needed and the level of equipment and skill required to get the shot for the client. Elements that will identify the cost will be experience, equipment, travel, risks, environmental aspects and the specific client requirements. Some photographer will charge per session and others may charge by print. Discuss with the photographer about their pay structure and how they break it down. And be sure to discuss how they want to handle the photograph rights as acquiring full rights to the images will add to the final cost.

Search for a deal if you can. Professional pet photography can be pricey. If you have restricted funds, keep your eye out for a discount. A lot of professional photographers are moving into pet photography and want to draw in new clients; also specific times of year business might be slow for those both established and brand-new pet photographers. However, always keep quality in mind and do your due diligence before putting down any cash, no matter how great the offer might sound.
