Tips on picking a professional pet photographer

1. Look for a specialist photographer

When choosing a pet photographer, you truly should choose someone who likes and is comfortable with your pet – somebody who dislikes cats, but likes dogs is not a good choice to shoot Kitty. By the same token, a love of dogs does not mean your photographer is comfortable or has experience shooting horse photography in an arena. Seek out a photographer who has experience shooting your species of pet, make them understand what you’re trying to get in your pet shoot, and check out their online portfolio to check for experience and style compatibility.

Explore a photographer’s site to see their previous work, then interview him or her prior to scheduling a consultation. Ask about the creative process and how the actual session will unfold. Make sure you feel comfortable with the photographer before booking the actual shoot. If you do not click with them, odds are your pet won’t either.

2. Decide on the deliverables

Discuss before the shoot with your pet photographer on what your objectives are for the photography session and what you plan to do with the images. Communicating where and how you plan to utilize the photos can assist your photographer get the photographs that you are searching for and ensure that the final deliverables satisfy your expectations.

3. Scheduling the shoot

When shooting outdoors consider the comfort of your pet and try to schedule your shoot with favorable lighting conditions – typically late afternoon. By decreasing the amount of equipment and lighting your photographer requires on the shoot, you also assist to reduce the stress the photo shoot may cause for your animal. When shooting in a studio, bring a favorite toy or other pet item. And in all cases, take treats with you.

4. After the photography session

Most pet images will be provided digitally. The pet photographer will typically let you preview the proofs so you can determine your preferred photographs and you for that reason do not end up paying for photos that you don’t want to keep. Be sure to ask if the photographs will be delivered untouched, or will the photographer use software to do some post-production retouch work (where the photographer fixes lighting, color grades or gets rid of blemishes, etc from the photos).

Just how much does Pet Photography cost?

Animal photography prices will have to be set based on the type of photography (studio or in the field) needed and the level of equipment and ability needed to get the shot for the client. Elements that will figure out the price will be experience, equipment, travel, hazards, environmental elements and the specific client requirements. Some photographer will charge per session and others may charge by print. Discuss with the photographer about their pay structure and how it breaks down. And be sure to discuss how they would like to manage the photograph rights as buying complete rights to the images will add to the cost.

Look for a deal if you can. Professional pet photography can be costly. If you have limited funds, keep your eye out for seasonal special offers. A lot of professional photographers are moving into pet photography and want to attract new customers; also particular times of year business may be sluggish for those both developed and brand-new pet photographers. However, always keep quality in mind and do your research before putting down any money, no matter how good the deal might sound.
