Tips on choosing a professional pet photographer

1. Find a specialist photographer

When choosing a pet photographer, you actually want to select somebody who enjoys and is comfortable with your pet – somebody who dislikes cats, but likes dogs is not a good choice to photograph Kitty. By the same token, a love of dogs doesn’t suggest your photographer is comfortable or has experience shooting horse photography in an arena. Seek out a photographer who has experience shooting your species of pet, make them understand what you’re looking for in your pet shoot, and check out their online portfolio to check for experience and style compatibility.

Explore a photographer’s website to see their previous work, and then interview him or her prior to making a consultation. Inquire about the creative process and how the actual session will unfold. Make certain you feel comfortable with the photographer prior to booking the actual shoot. If you don’t click with him or her, chances are your pet will not either.

2. Choose the deliverables

Discuss prior to the shoot with your pet photographer on what your objectives are for the photography session and what you plan to do with the images. Interacting where and how you will utilize the images can assist your photographer get the photos that you’re trying to achieve and ensure that the final deliverables fulfill your expectations.

3. Scheduling the session

When shooting outdoors think about the comfort of your animal and aim to arrange your shoot with favorable lighting conditions – usually late afternoon. By minimizing the amount of equipment and lighting your photographer requires on the shoot, you also assist to decrease the stress the photo shoot might cause for your animal. When shooting in a studio, bring a preferred toy or other pet item. And in all cases, take treats with you.

4. After the photography shoot

Most pet pictures will be provided digitally. The pet photographer will usually let you preview the proofs so you can identify your preferred photographs and you therefore do not end up paying for pictures that you don’t want to keep. Make sure to ask if the photographs will be provided unedited, or will the photographer use software to do some post-production retouch work (where the photographer remedies lighting, color grades or eliminates imperfections, etc from the photos).

Just how much does Pet Photography cost?

Animal photography pricing will need to be set based upon the kind of photography (studio or in the field) needed and the level of equipment and skill required to get the shot for the customer. Elements that will determine the cost will be experience, equipment, travel, risks, environmental aspects and the specific client requirements. Some photographer will charge per session and others might charge by print. Discuss with the photographer about their pay structure and how it breaks down. And make sure to discuss how they wish to handle the photograph rights as buying full rights to the images will add to the final cost.

Search for a special offer if you can. Professional pet photography can be costly. If you have restricted funds, keep your eye out for seasonal special offers. Many professional photographers are moving into pet photography and want to draw in new clients; also particular times of year business might be slow for those both established and new pet photographers. Always keep quality in mind and do your research before putting down any money, no matter how excellent the offer might sound.
