Tips on choosing a professional pet photographer

1. Look for a specialist photographer

When picking a pet photographer, you really want to select someone who likes and is comfortable with your pet – somebody who dislikes cats, but loves dogs is not a good option to photograph Kitty. By the same token, a love of dogs doesn’t imply your photographer is comfortable or has experience shooting horse photography in an arena. Seek out a photographer who has experience shooting your species of pet, let them know exactly what you’re trying to get in your pet shoot, and check out their online portfolio to look for experience and style compatibility.

Explore a photographer’s site to see their previous work, then interview him or her prior to making an appointment. Inquire about the creative process and how the actual session will unfold. Make certain you feel comfortable with the photographer before booking the actual shoot. If you do not click with him or her, chances are your pet will not either.

2. Decide on the deliverables

Discuss before the shoot with your pet photographer on what your goals are for the photography session and exactly what you intend to do with the photos. Interacting where and how you will use the photos can assist your photographer get the photos that you’re searching for and make sure that the final deliverables satisfy your expectations.

3. Scheduling the shoot

When shooting outdoors think about the comfort of your animal and aim to arrange your shoot with favorable lighting conditions – generally late afternoon. By reducing the amount of equipment and lighting your photographer needs on the shoot, you also assist to decrease the stress the photo shoot might trigger for your animal. When shooting in a studio, bring a favorite toy or other pet item. And in all cases, bring treats with you.

4. After the photography session

Most pet images will be provided digitally. The pet photographer will generally let you preview the proofs so you can determine your preferred photographs and you for that reason don’t end up paying for photographs that you don’t want to keep. Make certain to ask if the photographs will be delivered untouched, or will the photographer use software to do some post-production retouch work (where the photographer corrects lighting, color grades or gets rid of blemishes, etc from the photos).

Just how much does Pet Photography cost?

Animal photography rates will have to be set based on the kind of photography (studio or in the field) required and the level of equipment and skill needed to get the shot for the client. Aspects that will identify the price will be experience, equipment, travel, dangers, environmental elements and the specific client requirements. Some photographer will charge per session and others may charge by print. Discuss with the photographer about their pay structure and how they break it down. And make sure you discuss how they want to handle the photograph rights as acquiring complete rights to the images will add to the final cost.

Try to find a special offer if you can. Professional pet photography can be costly. If you have restricted funds, keep your eye out for a discount. Many professional photographers are moving into pet photography and wish to bring in new customers; also specific times of year business might be sluggish for those both established and brand-new pet photographers. Always keep quality in mind and do your research prior to putting down any money, no matter how good the offer might sound.
