Pet photography varies from portraits of domesticated animals (dogs to cats to birds) to more editorial type shots that aim to catch the beauty of animals (picture horse and equine photography) engaging in their natural or domestic environment.

High quality pet photography aims to display, artistically, the character of the animal being photographed. These shoots can be held in various places, from studio to on-location. The majority of pet professional photographers have their own style and while some may shoot all sorts of animals, certain photographers prefer to specialize particular kinds of animals.

Here are five good reasons you can’t beat a working with a professional pet photographer.

1. You can’t replace knowledge and experience

Technological developments have actually made top quality equipment far more budget friendly for amateur photographers, however amateurs are still amateurs. Professional photographers not only have the camera, lenses, and other equipment required to get the perfect shot, they have the training and experience to do so too.

2. You cannot beat the imagination of a professional pet photographer

Your pet’s personality should shines through in the pictures that you take of him/her. The very best pet photographers consider not only the character of your pet but also his/her lifestyle.

3. You can’t beat the ease

Let the professional crawl around on the lawn – or jump in the pool – while you sit back, unwind, and enjoy the action unfold. You might also pick up a few helpful hints to improve your own pet shooting abilitiy.

4. You can’t beat the effectiveness

A professional pet photographer also has the knowledge to snap the very best images in the least amount of time. They usually charge by the hour and have no desire to waste their time or yours.

5. You can participate in the fun

The majority of professional pet photographers these days strive to catch the bond between you and your pet, resulting in a cherished photo that will undoubtedly hang in a place of significance in your house for several years to come.

Tips on choosing a professional pet photographer

1. Find a specialist photographer

When selecting a pet photographer, you truly want to pick somebody who likes and is comfortable with your pet – someone who dislikes cats, but enjoys dogs is not a great choice to photograph Kitty. By the same token, a love of dogs doesn’t imply your photographer is comfortable or has experience shooting horse photography in an arena. Look for a photographer who has experience shooting your type of pet, make them understand exactly what you’re trying to get in your pet shoot, and check out their online portfolio to check for experience and style compatibility.

Explore a photographer’s site to see their previous work, and then interview them prior to scheduling a consultation. Inquire about the creative process and how the actual session will unfold. Make sure you feel comfortable with the photographer prior to scheduling the actual shoot. If you don’t click with them, chances are your pet won’t either.

2. Determine the deliverables

Discuss before the shoot with your pet photographer on what your goals are for the photography session and what you plan to do with the photos. Communicating where and how you will use the images can assist your photographer get the photos that you are looking for and make sure that the final deliverables satisfy your expectations.

3. Scheduling the session

When shooting outdoors think about the comfort of your animal and try to schedule your shoot with favorable lighting conditions – typically late afternoon. By decreasing the amount of equipment and lighting your photographer needs on the shoot, you also help to lower the tension the photo shoot might trigger for your animal. When shooting in a studio, bring a preferred toy or other pet item. And in all cases, bring treats with you.

4. After the photography session

Most pet photos will be delivered digitally. The pet photographer will normally let you preview the proofs so you can determine your preferred photographs and you for that reason do not end up paying for pictures that you do not want. Be sure to ask if the photographs will be delivered unedited, or will the photographer use software to do some post-production touch up work (where the photographer remedies lighting, color grades or eliminates blemishes, etc from the photos).

How much does Pet Photography cost?

Animal photography prices will have to be set based on the type of photography (studio or in the field) required and the level of equipment and ability required to get the shot for the client. Aspects that will identify the rate will be experience, equipment, travel, dangers, environmental aspects and the specific customer requirements. Some photographer will charge per session and others might charge by print. Discuss with the photographer about their pay structure and how it breaks down. And be sure you discuss how they would like to manage the photograph rights as acquiring full rights to the images will add to the final cost.

Search for a special offer if you can. Professional pet photography can be pricey. If you have limited funds, keep your eye out for seasonal special offers. A lot of professional photographers are moving into pet photography and want to draw in new customers; also particular times of year business might be slow for those both established and new pet photographers. Always keep quality in mind and do your due diligence prior to putting down any loan, no matter how great the deal might sound.
