5 Reasons You Why You Should Consider Employing a Professional Pet Photographer

Sure, camera gear is fairly cheap, but amateurs are still amateurs. Here’s how a professional can make a huge difference in the end results of your pet photography.

Pet photography varies from portraits of domesticated animals (dogs to cats to birds) to more editorial type shots that make every effort to catch the appeal of animals (picture horse and equine photography) engaging in their natural or domestic environment.

Excellent pet photography aims to show, artistically, the character of the animal being photographed. These shoots can be held in different locations, from studio to on-location. A lot of pet photographers have their own style and while some may shoot all sorts of animals, other professional photographers prefer to specialize particular kinds of animals.

Here are 5 great reasons why you can’t beat a hiring a professional pet photographer.

1. You can’t substitute for knowledge and experience

Technological advancements have made top quality equipment much more affordable for amateur photographers, however amateurs are still amateurs. Professional photographers not only have the camera, lenses, and other equipment needed to get the ideal shot, they have the training and experience to do so too.

2. You can’t beat the creativity of a professional pet photographer

Your pet’s personality should shines through in the pictures that you take of him/her. The best pet photographers take into consideration not only the character of your pet but also their way of life.

3. It can’t get any easier

Let the professional crawl around on the yard – or jump in the swimming pool – while you sit back, unwind, and watch the action unfold. You might just pick up a couple of helpful hints to improve your own pet shooting abilitiy.

4. You cannot beat the effectiveness

A professional pet photographer also has the know-how to get the very best images in the least amount of time. They usually charge by the hour and have no desire to waste their time or yours.

5. You can participate in the fun

Most professional pet photographers nowadays strive to capture the bond between you and your pet, resulting in a valued photo that will definitely hang in a location of significance in your house for years to come.

Tips on picking a professional pet photographer

1. Find a specialist photographer

When choosing a pet photographer, you really should select someone who enjoys and is comfortable with your pet – somebody who is allergic to cats, but loves dogs is not a good option to photograph Kitty. By the same token, a love of dogs does not mean your photographer is comfortable or has experience shooting horse photography in an arena. Seek out a photographer who has experience shooting your species of pet, let them know what you’re trying to get in your pet shoot, and check out their online portfolio to check for experience and style compatibility.

Check out a photographer’s site to see their previous work, then interview him or her prior to making an appointment. Inquire about the creative process and how the actual session will unfold. Ensure you feel totally at ease with the photographer before scheduling the actual shoot. If you do not click with him or her, odds are your pet will not either.

2. Decide on the deliverables

Discuss prior to the shoot with your pet photographer on what your objectives are for the photography session and what you intend to do with the images. Interacting where and how you plan to utilize the photos can help your photographer get the images that you’re looking for and make sure that the final deliverables fulfill your expectations.

3. Scheduling the session

When shooting outdoors think about the comfort of your animal and aim to arrange your shoot with favorable lighting conditions – normally late afternoon. By reducing the amount of equipment and lighting your photographer needs on the shoot, you also assist to decrease the tension the photo shoot might trigger for your animal. When shooting in a studio, bring a preferred toy or other pet item. And in all cases, take treats with you.

4. After the photography session

Most pet photos will be provided digitally. The pet photographer will typically let you preview the proofs so you can determine your preferred photographs and you for that reason don’t end up paying for photos that you do not want to keep. Make certain to ask if the photographs will be provided unedited, or will the photographer use software to do some post-production touch up work (where the photographer remedies lighting, color grades or removes blemishes, etc from the photos).

How much does Pet Photography cost?

Animal photography prices will have to be set based on the kind of photography (studio or in the field) required and the level of equipment and skill required to get the shot for the client. Aspects that will determine the rate will be experience, equipment, travel, risks, environmental elements and the specific customer requirements. Some photographer will charge per session and others might charge by print. Discuss with the photographer about their pay structure and how they break it down. And be sure you discuss how they wish to handle the photograph rights as purchasing complete rights to the images will add to the final cost.

Look for a special offer if you can. Professional pet photography can be pricey. If you have restricted funds, keep your eye out for seasonal special offers. Many professional photographers are moving into pet photography and want to bring in new customers; also particular times of year business may be sluggish for those both developed and new pet photographers. However, always keep quality in mind and do your due diligence before putting down any cash, no matter how good the offer might sound.
