10 Tips for Choosing the Right Event Photographer

Are you in need of an event photographer to photograph your next corporate conference, cocktail party, wedding, or business retreat? If you’ve recently begun looking for one, you’re most likely understanding exactly what a difficult job it can be, as there are countless photographers to select from. Here are some tips to remember when picking your next occasion photographer.

Know the maximum amount that you want to spend|your budget}.
This is the first step in limiting your options for a professional photographer. When determining your budget, keep in mind the timing of your occasion. Is it a four-hour cocktail party or a five-day conference? If you’re on a very tight budget, you may need to consider hiring a friend or family enthusiast to photograph your occasion. If you choose this route don’t expect the best photographs if you decide not to hire a professional event photographer who offers both expertise and experience.

Determine your photographic design.
What are these photos going to be utilized for? The majority of occasions are being photographed for historic events, to get a basic catalog of the event guests, speakers, and entertainment. This typically also includes the traditional postured, smiling shots which are excellent to have as mementos of your event. If you’re going to be using the images for other purposes such as marketing collateral for use in web sites and sales brochures, then you might wish to have the photographer shoot in a somewhat different, more commercialized way.

Ask friends and family for referrals.
Word of mouth can still be one of the best ways to discover well-respected professional photographers in your area. If you do end up calling a photographer that was referred to you, be sure to mention your connection when you introduce yourself. You never know, you may even get a discounted rate for being a referral.

Search online and check out online ratings.
Now it’s time to visit Google. Examine customer ratings to make sure the photographer has a really good reputation. Also, look at the photographer’s web site to try and get a feel for who they are and their regular photographic style. If they have a badly looking web site you’ll want to proceed with caution as they may not be as knowledgeable as other event photographers in the area.

Look through their portfolio prior to choosing them.
These days the majority of photographers have at least some of their portfolio on their website, making it incredibly easy to examine their old work. You can always ask if they have other samples of work or a hard-copy portfolio to browse if that makes you more comfortable. When looking at their portfolio, keep in mind the kinds of shots they take, how well they photograph the event venues, as well as how dynamic they can be in their photography.

Find out about their experience of photographing events of roughly the same size as yours.
Let them know the number of people you are expecting at your event, and ask if they have much experience handling events of this size. Ask what they found challenging and/or intriguing about working an event of that size. Feel them out to make sure they can manage your event comfortably. Listen to any issues they might have.

Find out about the types of events they have the most experience with.
If you’re considering working with a professional photographer for your event, you’ll want to make certain they have at least some experience dealing with similar events. If you’re planning a corporate leadership summit and they have just covered weddings and family events, they might not be the ideal fit for you. Their portfolio ought to be enough for you to determine this, but if not, just ask them the number of similar events they have covered.

Ask how quickly they can develop the photos.
Sadly, a lot of professional photographers may take terrific images, but when it comes down to developing hard copy images or retouching digital images, they take way too long to finish the job. This is why it is important that you ask your photographer how soon they can develop your images or re-touch your digital images. It’s best to get this agreement in writing to safeguard your investment.

Ensure you have great rapport with your photographer.
Lastly, it’s important that you feel an excellent chemistry between yourself and your photographer since you will be working with them throughout your event. Do you feel good about the photographer’s creative abilities? Are they easy to speak with and do they freely address all your concerns? Keep in mind they will also be interacting with your event’s attendees on some level, so you’ll want to make certain they are typically a friendly person with great social skills. When you have addressed all of the above details, it’s time to hire your photographer!

Meet prior to the event and go over your expectations.
Now that you have decided on your photographer, you need to plan to meet with them prior to the event so that you can evaluate your expectations together with any specifics you want them to cover. For instance, let them know if you want them to take photographs of the event area before your guests arrive. also, tell them where the VIP visitors will be so that they can get plenty of photographs of this group at your event. Give them a run-down of the event schedule so they know all the primary elements to photograph.
