10 Tips for Choosing the Right Photographer for your Event

Are you in need of an event photographer to capture your next business conference, seasonal party, wedding, or company retreat? If you’ve recently started looking for one, you’re most likely realizing exactly what a difficult task it can be, as there are thousands of photographers to pick from. Here are some pointers to remember when picking your next occasion photographer.

Decide how much you want to spend|your budget}.
This is the primary step in limiting your choices for a professional event photographer. When determining your budget, remember the timing of your occasion. Is it a four-hour reception or a five-day conference? If you’re on a very tight budget, you may need to think about employing a buddy or family hobbyist to photograph your event. If you choose this route don’t expect to get the best results if you choose not to hire a professional photographer who offers both expertise and experience.

Determine your photographic style.
Exactly what are these images going to be used for? The majority of occasions are being photographed for historic purposes, to get a general catalog of the event participants, speakers, and entertainment. This usually also consists of the classic postured, smiling shots which are great to have as keepsakes of your event. If you’re going to be using the images for other purposes such as marketing collateral for use in websites and sales brochures, then you may want to have the photographer shoot in a slightly different, more commercialized style.

Ask family and friends for referrals.
Word of mouth can still be one of the best ways to learn about well-respected professional photographers near you. If you do wind up contacting a photographer that was referred to you, be sure to mention your connection when you speak to them. You never know, you may even get a discount for being a recommendation.

Browse online and check out online ratings.
Now it’s time to turn to Google. Inspect customer ratings to make sure the photographer has an excellent reputation. Also, take a look at the photographer’s web site to try and get a feel for who they are and their typical photographic style. If they have a badly designed website you’ll want to proceed with caution as they might not be as skilled as other event photographers in the area.

Browse their portfolio before selecting them.
These days the majority of photographers have at least some of their portfolio on their web site, which makes it extremely easy to examine their old work. You can always ask if they have other samples of work or a hard-copy portfolio to scan if that makes you more comfortable. When looking at their portfolio, keep in mind the kinds of shots they take, how well they photograph the event venues, in addition to how dynamic they can be with their photography.

Find out about their experience of photographing events of approximately the same size as the one you’re planning.
Let them know how many individuals you are expecting at your event, and ask if they have a lot of experience handling events of this size. Ask exactly what they thought was challenging and/or intriguing about working an event of that size. Feel them out to make certain they can handle your event comfortably. Listen to any concerns they might have.

Find out about the types of events they have the most experience with.
If you’re thinking about contracting with a professional photographer for your event, you’ll want to make sure they have at least some experience dealing with comparable events. If you’re planning a corporate leadership summit and they have just covered weddings and family events, they may not be the ideal fit for you. Their portfolio should tell you enough for you to decide this, but if not, just ask them how many similar events they have covered.

Ask how quickly they can deliver the images.
Sadly, a lot of professional photographers may take fantastic photos, however when it comes down to developing hard copy images or retouching digital images, they take too long to finish the job. This is why it is crucial that you ask your photographer how soon they can deliver your photos or re-touch your digital images. It’s best to obtain this agreement in writing to protect your investment.

Make sure you have great rapport with your photographer.
Finally, it’s crucial that you feel a good chemistry between yourself and your photographer considering that you will be dealing with them for the duration of your event. Do you feel good about the photographer’s artistic abilities? Are they easy to speak with and do they freely respond to all your concerns? Bear in mind they will also be engaging with your event’s guests on some level, so you’ll want to be sure they are generally a friendly person with great social skills. When you have addressed all the above details, it’s time to employ your photographer!

Meet prior to the event and review expectations.
Now that you have chosen your photographer, you should plan to meet with them prior to the event so that you can go over your expectations together with any specifics you would like them to cover. For instance, let them know if you would like them to take photographs of the event location before your attendees get there. also, tell them where the VIP guests will be so that they can get plenty of photographs of this group at your event. Give them a run-down of the event schedule so they are aware of all the main aspects to photograph.
