10 Tips for Choosing the Right Event Photographer

Are you in need of an event photographer to photograph your next business conference, cocktail party, wedding, or company retreat? If you’ve recently started searching for one, you’re probably recognizing exactly what an overwhelming task it can be, as there are countless professional photographers to select from. Here are some suggestions to bear in mind when choosing your next occasion photographer.

Know how much you want to spend|your budget}.
This is the primary step in limiting your choices for a professional photographer. When planning your budget, remember the timing of your occasion. Is it a four-hour reception or a five-day conference? If you’re on a very low budget, you may need to consider employing a good friend or family hobbyist to photograph your occasion. However, don’t expect to get the best results if you choose not to hire a professional photographer who offers both expertise and experience.

Determine your photographic style.
What are these pictures going to be used for? Most events are being photographed for historic purposes, to get a basic catalog of the event participants, speakers, and entertainment. This usually also includes the classic positioned, smiling shots which are fantastic to have as keepsakes of your event. If you’re going to be utilizing the photos for other purposes such as marketing collateral for use in web sites and brochures, then you might want to have the photographer shoot in a somewhat different, more commercialized style.

Ask family and friends for references.
Word of mouth can still be one of the very best methods to find out about well-respected professional photographers near you. If you do wind up calling a photographer that was referred to you, make sure to mention your connection when you introduce yourself. You never know, you might even get a discount for being a recommendation.

Browse online and read online ratings.
Now it’s time to check out Google. Check customer ratings to make sure the photographer has a good track record. Also, take a look at the photographer’s web site to get a feel for who they are and their normal photographic style. If they have an amateur looking website you’ll need to proceed with great caution as they may not be as knowledgeable as other event photographers in the area.

Check out their portfolio prior to hiring them.
Nowadays most photographers have at least some of their portfolio on their website, which makes it super easy to examine their previous work. You can always ask if they have other samples of work or a hard-copy portfolio to skim if that makes you more comfortable. When looking at their portfolio, remember the types of shots they take, how well they photograph the event venues, along with how vibrant they can be in their photography.

Ask them about their experience of photographing events of roughly the same size as yours.
Let them know the number of guests you are anticipating at your event, and ask if they have much experience handling events of this size. Ask what they found challenging and/or interesting about working an event of that size. Feel them out to make certain they can handle your event comfortably. Listen to any concerns they may have.

Get a feel for the types of events they are more experienced with.
If you’re considering working with a professional photographer for your event, you’ll need to make sure they have at least some experience dealing with comparable events. If you’re planning a business management summit and they have only covered weddings and family events, they may not be the perfect fit for your event. Their portfolio should be enough for you to determine this, but if not, simply ask the number of comparable events they have covered.

Ask how long it will take to develop the photographs.
Regrettably, many professional photographers will take excellent pictures, but when it comes down to developing hard copy images or retouching digital images, they take too long to finish the job. This is why it is important that you ask your photographer how soon they can develop your photos or re-touch your digital images. It’s best to get this answer in writing to safeguard your investment.

Make sure you have good rapport with your photographer.
Finally, it’s essential that you feel a good rapport between yourself and your photographer given that you will be working with them for the duration of your event. Do you trust the photographer’s artistic skills? Are they easy to talk to and do they freely answer all your concerns? Bear in mind they will also be interacting with your event’s attendees on some level, so you’ll want to be sure they are generally a friendly individual with good social skills. As soon as you have addressed all of the above details, it’s time to employ your photographer!

Meet prior to the event and evaluation expectations.
Now that you have selected your photographer, you must plan to consult with them prior to the event so that you can review your expectations together with any specifics you want them to cover. For instance, let them know if you want them to take photos of the event area before your guests get there. also, tell them where the VIP visitors will be so that they can get lots of photographs of this group at your event. Give them a run-down of the event schedule so they know all the primary aspects to mainly focus on.
