10 Tips for Choosing the Right Photographer for your Event

Are you in need of a photographer to photograph your next corporate conference, cocktail party, wedding, or business retreat? If you’ve recently begun looking for one, you’re most likely realizing exactly what a challenging job it can be, as there are countless photographers to select from. Here are some ideas to keep in mind when choosing your next event photographer.

Know how much you want to spend|your budget}.
This is the initial step in narrowing down your choices for a professional photographer. When deciding your budget, keep in mind the length of your event. Is it a four-hour reception or a five-day conference? If you’re on a very tight budget, you may need to consider working with a buddy or family hobbyist to photograph your occasion. If you choose this route don’t expect the best photographs if you decide not to hire a professional event photographer who offers both expertise and experience.

Decide on your photographic design.
Exactly what are these pictures going to be used for? Most occasions are being photographed for historic purposes, to get a general catalog of the event guests, speakers, and entertainment. This generally also includes the traditional posed, smiling shots which are great to have as mementos of your event. If you’re going to be utilizing the pictures for other purposes such as marketing collateral for use in websites and sales brochures, then you may wish to have the photographer shoot in a somewhat different, more commercialized style.

Ask friends and family for recommendations.
Word of mouth can still be among the very best ways to find out about well-respected professional photographers near you. If you do wind up calling a photographer that was referred to you, be sure to mention your connection when you speak to them. Who knows, you may even get a discounted rate for being a recommendation.

Search online and check out online reviews.
Now it’s time to turn to Google. Examine customer reviews to make sure the photographer has a good track record. Also, take a look at the photographer’s website to try and get a feel for who they are and their normal photographic style. If they have an amateur looking website you’ll want to proceed with great caution as they might not be as knowledgeable as other event photographers in the area.

Check out their portfolio prior to selecting them.
Nowadays the majority of photographers have at least some of their portfolio on their website, which makes it super easy to examine their previous work. You can always ask if they have other samples of work or a album of photographs to skim if that makes you more comfortable. When looking at their portfolio, remember the types of shots they take, how well they photograph the event venues, as well as how dynamic they can be with their photography.

Ask them about their experience of photographing events of roughly the same size as yours.
Let them know how many guests you are expecting at your event, and ask if they have much experience handling events of this size. Ask exactly what they thought was challenging and/or fascinating about working an event of that size. Feel them out to make sure they can manage your event comfortably. Pay attention to any concerns they might have.

Get a feel for the types of events they have the most experience with.
If you’re considering working with a photographer for your event, you’ll want to be sure they have at least some experience handling comparable events. If you’re preparing for a corporate management event and they have just covered weddings and family events, they may not be the best fit for your event. Their portfolio ought to be enough for you to decide this, but if not, just ask how many comparable events they have covered.

Ask how quickly they can deliver the photos.
Unfortunately, many professional photographers will take great photos, however when it comes down to developing hard copy images or retouching digital images, they take too long to finish the job. This is why it is important that you ask your photographer how quickly they can deliver your photos or re-touch your digital images. It’s best to obtain this answer in writing to safeguard your investment.

Make sure you have excellent rapport with your photographer.
Lastly, it’s essential that you feel a good rapport between yourself and your photographer because you will be working with them throughout your event. Do you trust the photographer’s artistic abilities? Are they simple to speak to and do they freely respond to all your concerns? Bear in mind they will also be connecting with your event’s attendees on some level, so you’ll need to make certain they are typically a friendly individual with great social skills. As soon as you have addressed all the above details, it’s time to hire your photographer!

Meet prior to the event and go over your expectations.
Now that you have picked your photographer, you must plan to meet them prior to the event so that you can review your expectations along with any specifics you would like them to cover. For example, let them know if you would like them to take photos of the event location before your guests get there. also, tell them where the VIP visitors will be so that they can get plenty of photographs of this group at your event. Give them a run-down of the event schedule so they understand all the main aspects to mainly focus on.
